Automatic download of the Birdwatcher Wildfeed List from Gary Bourgois' website so you don't have to use Internet Explorer to download it.
Create Microsoft Access Databases on the fly
For those of you who don't know, the Wildfeed List Viewer program has been made to help in the reading of Gary Bourgois' list, The Birdwatcher Wildfeed List, which you can get over the internet at http://www.nmia.com/~roberts/wildfeed
Here are important steps for downloading the Birdwatcher Wildfeed List each month from Gary Bourgois if you choose not to use the program to do it for you automatically.
You must download it using Microsoft Internet Explorer
Save it someplace on your hardrive
Tell the program exactly where you saved the file
If you don't have Microsoft Internet Explorer, please email me at kylej@execpc.com and I will send you the list through email as an attachment. Save the file to your hardrive and tell the program exactly where you saved the file.
In case you are wondering, the Wildfeed List Viewer Program converts Gary Bourgois' file into a Microsoft Access Database. If you have Microsoft Access, please freely use the database file (wildfeed.mdb) for your personal needs. If you want to use the database file for anything other than personal needs, you MUST contact Gary Bourgois to get permission. If Gary Bourgois says it is OK, I don't care if you use the database file which the program creates for you.
Create Microsoft Access Database on the Fly
From Windows 95, 98, or NT, click on Start -> Run
Use the "Browse..." button to find the path or type in the path to the location of the "wildfeed.exe" program file. (Ex. C:\Program Files\Wildfeed\wildfeed.exe)
Following the wildfeed.exe press the space bar then enter the path to location where you saved the wildfeed file from the Internet (Remember, if you don't use the program to automatically download it, you must use Microsoft Internet Explorer) The line should look something like this "C:\Program Files\Wildfeed\wildfeed.exe C:\wildfeed.txt" (The line will all depend on where you installed the program and saved the wildfeed file
Press OK (a dos screen should pop up and show you the things that are being added to the database. Where it is down, a window will pop up showing you where the database file is located on your hardrive)
To use the search feature, press the "Search" button
Using the tabs at the top of the screen, click what catagory you want to search by
In the text box, type in the phrase you want to search in that catagory, then either press the "Enter" key on your keyboard or press the "Search" button.
A list of the programs that matched your search will show up in the box below it
When you are done searching, press the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the screen
Using First, Previous, Next, Last buttons
Pressing the "First" button will bring you to the first record in the database
Pressing the "Last" button will bring you to the last record in the database
Pressing the "Next" button will bring you to the next record in the database
Pressing the "Previous" button will bring you to the previous record in the database
There are 2 ways to update the database. Here is the first:
Under the "Help" menu, there is a item that says "Check for changes to Wildfeed List", Click on that item
If you are not connected to the Internet, a screen for connecting to the Internet will pop up. Connect to the Internet. Once connected, the program will look at the file on the Internet and tell you what month the file is for and it will ask if you want to download it. If you want to download it, press "Yes"
Once the file is downloaded, the program will ask you if you want to update the database at that point in time. If you want to, press "Yes" Otherwise press "No" and another screen will pop up telling you where the file has been saved for future reference
Once the database has been updated, the program will automatically restart for you.
Here is the second way to update the database:
First you must download the list from the Internet, if you did this through the automatic process from the "Help" menu, you were told where the file was saved. You only need to follow this process if you told the program not to update the database once you downloaded it using the automatic process.
From the "File" menu, select "Create New Database"
Type in the path or use the browse button to find the path to the Wildfeed file located on your hardrive. If you can't find it on your hardrive, press "Download File From Internet" then follow the instruction listed in the first way to update the database.
Press "OK"
You will receive a message that tells you the process may take a while
At the end, the program will automatically restart itself.
In order to downlaod the program, you must have Windows 95/98/NT and 3.64 MB of free disk space on your hardrive.
The program can be downloaded by clicking below, make sure you send your comments and suggestions to kylej@execpc.com
